About Esophagitis

About Esophagitis

Swallow Your Pride and Find Treatment

The esophagus is the tube that sends food from the mouth into the stomach. It is made up of muscles and can be damaged, making it hard to swallow without pain. When this happens and the esophagus is inflamed, it is a condition known as esophagitis. At miVIP, we offer the innovative and minimally invasive EGD procedure to diagnose and treat the issue.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is a procedure performed by the surgeons at miVIP. To ensure that each patient with this condition is given proper treatment, our physicians are highly trained and experienced in this innovative procedure.

Causes

Perhaps the most common cause of the condition, esophagitis, is gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). The reason for this is that GERD allows the acid from the stomach to enter the esophagus, which causes irritation. Some other common causes include:

  • Irritating medications
  • Infections due to a weak immune system
  • Scleroderma and other conditions that make it difficult to swallow
  • Food allergies

Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, speak to your physician about an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) to diagnose and treat the condition:

  • No appetite
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Dry, consistent cough
  • Pain behind the breastbone when eating
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Food getting stuck in the esophagus after swallowing
