Kyphosis
A Forward Rounding of the Upper Back
At miVIP Surgery Centers, we are equipped to handle all back ailments from degenerative disc disease to the often severe spinal deformity known as kyphosis. Most commonly referred to as a hunchback, humpback or round back, kyphosis is a condition that can occur at any age. While some rounding of the spine is considered normal, kyphosis creates a more exaggerated forward rounding of the upper back, which not only causes issues with posture but can also result in pain.
How Common is Kyphosis?
Only about 6 percent of the general population is affected by kyphosis. What Causes Kyphosis
Kyphosis is often caused by:- Osteoporosis – Thinning bones can create crushed vertebrae.
- Degenerative disc disease – Over time, the gel in the spinal discs can shrink or dry out, which can increase the severity of kyphosis.
- Scheuermann’s disease – This is a hereditary disorder that generally begins prior to puberty when an individual is just about to hit a growth spurt.
- Cancer – Spinal cancer can weaken the vertebrae making them more susceptible to damage.
- Birth defects – Some babies develop kyphosis given that their spinal column doesn’t properly develop while in the womb.
Kyphosis Symptoms
Symptoms of kyphosis generally include:- A visibly curved spine
- Back pain
- Stiffness
- Immobility
How to Treat Kyphosis
Depending on the cause of kyphosis, as well as the symptoms present, a physician may treat the condition using one of the following:- Medication – Pain relievers or prescription medication are often required to manage pain. Osteoporosis drugs can be used to strengthen the spine and prevent additional damage from occurring.
- Physical Therapy – Exercises is often used to increase flexibility of the spine and strength abdominal muscles. Together they have been known to improve posture.
- Braces – A body brace is often used by children who are born with Scheuermann’s disease. Given that they are still growing, the kyphosis may be halted by wearing the brace.
- Surgery – Our spinal surgeons may recommend a cervical fusion if the curvature of the spine is severe. When spinal nerves or the spinal cord is pinched, surgery may be the best option. A cervical fusion joins at least two vertebrae together. It can correct the deformity and decrease pain.
