How does robotic surgery work?

Using the da Vinci Si Surgical System, physicians sit at a computerized console located next to the operating table. The surgeon makes a small, dime-sized opening, through which he can insert his instruments. One of these includes a camera that transmits high-definition, three dimensional pictures of the surgical site that the surgeon views through a special headset.
